National Depression Education & Awareness Month is sponsored each October by Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc.
The Center for Disease Control defines depression as a mental illness. It can be costly and debilitating to sufferers, adversely impacting the course and outcome of ordinary chronic conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
Depression also can result in increased work absenteeism, short-term disability, and decreased productivity.
Who Tends to be Most Depressed?
According to the CDC, the majority of depressed persons share one or more of the following traits:
Persons 45-64 years of age
Women
Persons of color
High school dropouts
Divorced but not remarried
Unemployed
Those without health insurance
These categories form the basis for most persons suffering from depression.
