The third Friday of September is National Prisoner of War (POW)/Missing in Action (MIA) Recognition Day.
On this day, US military installations fly the POW/MIA flag, which symbolizes all who became prisoners of war and those that continue to be missing. Throughout the country, rallies and vigils are held. Official National POW/MIA Recognition Day posters are displayed at schools and public buildings.
First observed on July 18, 1979, the date moved to the third Friday of September in 1986.
