Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican celebration highlighting the closeness of family and friends.
It celebrates a willingness to pray, remember dead loved ones, and support their spiritual journey.
Acknowledged by the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, this is a public and highly celebrated occasion in Mexico. On this day, families build "ofrendas" (altars) that contain sugar skulls and marigolds (the flower of the dead) and samplings of the favorite food of the departed, which are then brought to the graveyard and offered graveside.
