All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day are Christian observances first declared by the Catholic Church in the eighth century AD.
It is a time of feasting during the day to honor those sainted and soon to be sainted. In England, it was a time of penance to reflect on the souls of those sanctioned to purgatory. Through quiet vigil, it's hoped that trapped souls will be released into the kingdom of heaven.
The time of the year is the precipice of fall into winter, representing the end of the summer harvest, the beginning of winter, and preparation for renewal in the spring. It is a metaphor for transitioning from life to death to eternal life and salvation.
