Columbus Day is an official holiday in Belize.
The purpose of this day is to commemorate the events on October 11-15, 1492, when Christopher Columbus and his crew first sighted land. He made landfall on October 12, 1492, and thought he had found a way to India.
It would take time for him to realize he had found an entirely new continent.
