The first Paralympic games were held in England in 1945 to aid in the rehabilitation of soldiers returning from WWII. In 1948 it became an international sporting competition under the initiation of Dr. Ludwig Gutmann of Germany.
In 1960, in Rome, the first official Paralympics were held.
