During January of 1919 molasses played an catastrophic (rather than sweet) role in the history of Boston. An immense storage tank filled with molasses collapsed and sent a wave of molasses through the city's historic North End. Twenty-one people, mostly immigrants and city workers, died and another 150 were injured.
Perhaps this day and its sweet treat might also be a reminder of that tragic event a century past.
