The first auto insurance policy was issued by Traveler’s Insurance in 1897 to Gilbert J. Loomis, who built a one-cylinder car.
So why does this day fall on February 1st and most of the sources online list 1898? A lack of fact checking, basically, for over sixty years.
According to the historian at Traveler's insurance, whom we contacted, the company believed that the policy issued to Dr. Truman Martin of Buffalo, New York in February 1898 was its first auto policy for over sixty years. Then one day in 1956, eighty-plus year old Gilbert J. Loomis notified Traveler's this was not the case. Rather than New York, it was the state of Ohio that hosted the first auto coverage and his policy with Travelers, dated 1897, made Loomis the first person in history to have an auto insurance. Unfortunately, the exact date that policy went into effect in 1897 is unknown. Nobody made a copy of the historic document when the record was amended in 1956.
When did mandatory car insurance begin? That started across the pond. United Kingdom is responsible for the idea of mandatory car insurance for licensed drivers/owners of vehicles. The British Parliament passed the Road Traffic Act in 1930 after a heated debate in the House of Lords held in January of that year.
Therefore, though most sources on the Internet mark this as an anniversary, we cannot. The actual date is likely in October or November, not February as once believed.
