DESCRIPTION:
The United States Navy was established as the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775, by the Continental Congress. It authorized the procurement, fitting, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.
Navy Day originated with the Navy League and marks the anniversary of its founding in 1922. The day gives recognition to the naval service and those serving it.
