Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month occurs in May each year. It was started by California- based National Fibromyalgia Association, and today it is supported by the Pharmacists Planning Service.
Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain disorder affecting an estimated ten million people in the US and three to six percent of the world’s population. While fibromyalgia (FM) can also occur in men and children of all ethnic groups, 75-90 percent of those with this disorder are women.
Fibromyalgia patients experience chronic widespread body pain and moderate to extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties. Often they are sensitive to touch, light, and sound and can develop irritable bowel syndrome, lupus, and arthritis.
This month is about focusing awareness on fibromyalgia and creating an increased understanding of the disease and the struggles its victims deal with daily.
