Palliative Care Week, Ntl.(AU): May 11-17

Palliative Care is a fancy word for the process of dying and identifying what matters most to you and those you love. The Productivity Commission’s recent report into human services found between 80,000 and 140,000 of the 160,000 people who die each year in Australia could benefit from high-quality end-of-life care. Dying is a normal part of life, so all Australians need to discuss death and the type of care they would want to receive if they could no longer speak for themselves. National Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to open up the conversation with loved ones and help to ensure that when the inevitable happens, it will be as stress-free as possible for the survivors and attend to the needs of the departed.

Pansexual Visability Day: May 24

It is Pansexual Visibility Day, a day to proudly declare your sexual desire for Homosapiens of every persuasion curated according to your unique preferences. What began as defined areas of sexual orientations: gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual, has morphed into over forty different identities in the past decade, each with its rainbow style flag, its truth, its change to grammar, and its focus on "I." One of these new designations is pansexual, which those identifying as such insist is different from bisexual. Or, depending on who you consult, not separate but a subset because you can be both. Don't worry if you are confused. Pansexual Visibility Day came into being by LGBTQ+ Twitter activists to celebrate pansexuals and encourage education about their truth. Bisexuality means you are sexually attracted to men and women. Pansexual means you are attracted to men, women and any other of the forty different designations now populating gender identity and human sexuality. You are sexually attracted to human beings, regardless of sex, gender, or identity, and who you are attracted to changes, morphs, and merges as often as you like. Panromantic Visibility Day is another new day. It describes people who change romantic attractions day-to-day or hour-by-hour, whether or not sexual feelings are involved.

Parrot Day, World: May 31

World Parrot Day, first held in 2004, celebrates the beautiful tropical species of birds called parrots. Three hundred and fifty varieties of parrots exist, and one-third face potential extinction due to loss of habitat and the exotic pet trade. World Parrot Day seeks to raise awareness about protecting parrots in the wild and best practices in caring for parrots as pets. Annually May 31.

Peace Officers Memorial Day: May 15

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a national observance in the United States that pays tribute to local, state, and federal peace officers who have died or received an injury in the line of duty. It is observed annually on May 15 and is part of National Police Week. The observance began on October 1, 1961, when Congress authorized President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day through a joint resolution (Public Law 87-726). In honor of the fallen officers throughout the United States, flags fly at half-staff. Various memorial services, candlelight vigils, and other events pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., serves as the focal point for many of these events, featuring the engraved names of over 22,000 officers who have lost their lives while serving their communities since the first recorded police death in 1791.

Pet Cancer Awareness Month, Ntl.: May*

A successful example of cause marketing, National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is sponsored by Blue Buffalo, the pet food, Petco, Morris Animal Foundation, and the Riedel Cody Fund. The month seeks to find a cure for pet cancer and is a fundraiser and an awareness campaign. Cancer will affect one out of every four dogs; of those, over half will die. According to Morris Animal Foundation, a world leader in advancing veterinary research, cancer is the number one disease-related cause of death in dogs and cats. The May promotion goes like this: For each bag of Blue Buffalo dog or cat food purchased at Petco stores across the country, one dollar goes to organizations such as the Morris Animal Foundation and others that provide funds to universities and clinics researching the causes, prevention, and treatment of canine and feline cancer. National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is one of two months highlighting pet cancers, each with different sponsors.

PGA Championship (US-NC): May 12-18

The PGA Championship began in 1918. This major golf tournament draws the world's best professional golfers and is the year's final major. The US PGA was an offshoot of the United States Golf Association (USGA), the first official golf organization in the country, formed in 1894. Its advocacy played a crucial role in making golf one of the most popular sports in the US. The PGA was established in February 1916 following a luncheon hosted by Rodman Wanamaker at the Wykagyl Country Club. The first tournament was held at the Siwanoy Country Club in New York in October 1916. The winner, Jim Barnes, was awarded a gold medal with diamond studs and $500 in cash.
