Memorial Day: May 26

The last Monday of May is Memorial Day in the United States. It is one of seven major US holidays that most people are given as a paid holiday (the others are Juneteenth, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Labor Day). The day remembers all whom have given their lives for the nation. Typically Americans use this three-day weekend for family gatherings, BBQs, outdoor activities, and recreation. Memorial Day is considered the official kick-off of summer.

Menstrual Hygiene Day, Global: May 28

Menstruation is a normal biological process wherein about 800 million women and girls menstruate on any given day. Yet, periods continue to be shrouded in taboos and myths, and women and girls are stigmatized and excluded. Adverse social norms, poor education, lack of access to hygiene products, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and disposal options severely affect women's and girls' health, education, employment opportunities, and overall social status. To change this, WASH United started Menstrual Hygiene Day in 2014. Since then, it has grown into a veritable movement, with more than 420 partner organizations globally. In 2017, there were 350 MH Day events in 54 countries, of which 67 were in India alone. MH Day reached more than 160 million people through digital campaigning. In India, 50 percent of girls do not know about menstruation, and when they get their period, it leads to fear and poor menstrual hygiene practices. Education about menstruation and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is critical to empower girls to manage their menstruation safely, hygienically, confidently, and without stigma.

Mental Health Action Day: May 15 (est)

Created in 2021, Mental Health Action Day is supported by over 1,300 organizations, brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. May is also Mental Health Month in the United States, and this day is intended to drive the conversation from mental health awareness to mental health action. Mental Health Action Day comes at a critical time. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected the mental health and well-being of people of color, young people, and LGBTQ+ communities. Studies have found: Four in ten adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, compared to one in ten before the pandemic. Fifty-six percent of young adults ages 18-24 reported symptoms of anxiety or depression during the pandemic. Forty-eight percent of Black people reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder during the pandemic versus 42% of all Adults and 40.9% of white people. Communities of color, who have experienced disparate impacts of COVID-19 and the ongoing trauma of systemic racism from police brutality to anti-Asian violence, are also facing more significant mental health challenges than ever before but continue to face challenges accessing mental health care. The cross-sector collaboration calling attention to the great need for support and action to address mental health in the same way we treat physical health needs is groundbreaking. Today's actions are only the beginning, from media and tech companies to nonprofits, consumer brands, government agencies, and cultural leaders. Coalition partners will host a series of activations, from public events featuring experts and activists to employee engagement activities. They will empower people to take initial action to support their mental health needs, whether for themselves or others.

Mental Health Awareness Week (CA): May 5-11

During CMHA Mental Health Week, Canadians take the time to reflect on their mental health. Canadians are speaking up on the need for psychotherapy, counseling, and community-based mental health services and programs, in addition to acknowledging the issues accompanying mental illness and the need for respect and housing for those suffering, regardless of income. National Mental Health Week in Canada has been a weekly occurrence since 1951.

Mental Health Awareness Week (UK): May 12-18

Mental Health Awareness Week in the United Kingdom occurs the second week of May. Each year there is a new theme. Everyone has anxiety at some point in their lives, whether preparing for a job interview or bringing up a child. It is normal to experience stress in everyday situations; however, persistent and excessive anxiety can cause serious mental health and physical issues. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems in nearly every country. While a low level of stress can be a beneficial motivating force, it can sometimes take over your life. The success of Mental Health Awareness Week is mainly due to the generous support of organizations and individuals throughout the UK who get involved by publicizing the week, organizing activities and events, and having some fun.

The formal event is a who's who of celebrities, politicians, and socialites. It is the foremost "fashion" show of the year. Funds raised from the event benefit the Costume Institute.

Vets, rescue missions, and animal control personnel routinely scan animals. It is also required if you travel with your pet overseas. Midnight Sun (NO): May 14 - July 30

Between May 14 and July 30 each year, the sun never sets below the horizon, and it is genuinely 24 hours of sunshine. North Cape is the northernmost town in Europe and is well inside the Arctic Circle.

Midwife, International Day of the: May 5

International Day of the Midwife was created in 1991 by the International Confederation of Midwives and is observed in over 50 countries. Today, 80 percent of those alive were born with the help of a midwife. In the United States, midwives attend approximately ten percent of births in hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Pregnancy and childbirth enormously impact the health of women, newborns, and families, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socio-economically. The goal of the midwifery model of care is to support women and their families in birthing their babies safely, unhindered, and confidently. Every woman deserves access to a midwife's high-quality, safe, personalized, attentive, affordable, and respectful care.

Military Appreciation Month, Ntl.: May

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM), created in 1999, was initially designated by Congress. The purpose is to learn more about the history and recognition of the US armed services, the individuals who serve, and their achievements. Events tied to National Military Appreciation Month include: Loyalty Day: May 1 VE (Victory in Europe) Day: May 8 Military Spouse Appreciation Day: May 9 Armed Forces Day: May 17 Memorial Day: Last Monday in May. The month remembers, honors, and recognizes all military personnel, those men and women who have served throughout our history, those now serving, their families, and those who have given their lives in defense of the United States, including members of the National Guard and Reserves, retirees and veterans, and more than 90 million Americans over the past 250 years. Funds raised during this month go to The Armed Forces Children's Education Fund, Inc. and other non-profits geared at assisting those who serve, have served, and their families.

Military Spouses Day: May 9

Military Spouse Appreciation Day occurs Friday before Mother’s Day in the United States. Military Spouses are an invaluable asset to securing and safeguarding the United States. They support their soldiers, seamen, and marines through missions, deployments, reintegration, and resets. It’s one of the most challenging jobs in the world, given spouses can often be away for months or years at a time, and due to security reasons, their whereabouts are unknown. A spouse never knows if the last time they see their spouse will be the last time. Local events in military communities include cooking, fashion shows, workshops, sporting events, and family entertainment. See your branch’s local MWR for an itinerary. President Reagan first acknowledged this event in 1984.

Missing and Exploited Children's Day, Intl.: May 25

International Missing & Exploited Children's Day began in 1979. President Ronald Reagan made it an official US observance in 1983. Supported by various organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, it's a day focused on raising awareness about abduction threats and the exploitation of children and teens worldwide.
