Daylight Savings (BR), Begins: October 19

06:20 AM | -
Daylight Savings in Brazil’s Southern states commences on the 3rd Sunday in October (Spring Forward) and ends on the 3rd Sunday in February (Fall Back). On this day, we move the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM in October or one hour back in February at 2 AM on Sunday. The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895. Several variations were adopted throughout history, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark), and saving energy. The closer one lives to the North and South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer months. _______________________ Daylight Savings Above the Equator: United Kingdom, Albania, Adorra, Austria, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guernsey, Holy See, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Kosovo, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Western Sahara: Last Sunday of March: Last Sunday, October United States, Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, Saint Pierre & Miquelon: 2nd Sunday, March; 1st Sunday of November Iran: Begins March 21/22; Ends September 20/21 Israel & Palestine: Friday before last Sunday, March; Last Sunday, October Jordan, Syria: Last Friday, March; Last Friday, October Mexico: 1st Sunday, April; Last Sunday, October _______________________ DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BELOW THE EQUATOR Australia—First Sunday of October (spring forward ); first Sunday in April (fall back). Healthcare Quality Week, Intl.: October 19-25 (est)

06:20 AM | -
INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE QUALITY WEEK: ADVOCATING FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH International Healthcare Quality Week promotes the importance of quality in healthcare and recognizes the contributions of healthcare professionals committed to improving patient outcomes. The event is led by the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) and supported by various global health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO). The purpose of the week is to highlight the critical role of quality improvement in healthcare systems worldwide and to encourage continuous advancements in healthcare practices. International Healthcare Quality Week is a platform for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the public to discuss the challenges and opportunities in delivering high-quality care. The event underscores the importance of evidence-based practices, patient safety, and the efficient use of resources to achieve optimal health outcomes. GLOBAL CHALLENGES TO HEALTHCARE However, achieving healthcare quality on a global scale is fraught with challenges. Some of the key impediments to healthcare worldwide include: —Access to Care In many parts of the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, access to basic healthcare services is limited due to poverty, geographic barriers, and a shortage of healthcare professionals. —Healthcare Inequity Disparities in healthcare access and quality persist between different populations, often along socioeconomic, racial, and geographic lines. These inequities lead to significant differences in health outcomes. —Resource Constraints Many healthcare systems face financial and logistical challenges, including inadequate funding, insufficient medical supplies, and outdated infrastructure, which hinder their ability to provide high-quality care. —Workforce Challenges The global healthcare workforce is under strain due to burnout, insufficient training, and uneven distribution of healthcare workers, particularly in rural and underserved areas. —Chronic Diseases and Aging Populations The rising prevalence of chronic diseases and the aging global population are placing additional demands on healthcare systems, requiring new strategies for managing long-term care and complex health needs. ADDRESSING IMPEDIMENTS Addressing these impediments requires a multifaceted approach. Societies can take several steps to improve healthcare quality: —Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure Governments and organizations need to prioritize investments in healthcare infrastructure, including modernizing facilities, expanding access to medical technology, and ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines and equipment. —Strengthening Healthcare Workforces Training, supporting, and retaining healthcare professionals is crucial, including addressing burnout, providing continuous education opportunities, and ensuring fair compensation. —Promoting Equity in Healthcare Policies and initiatives focusing on reducing healthcare disparities and ensuring all populations have access to quality care are essential, including targeted programs for vulnerable and marginalized groups. —Leveraging Technology Using digital health tools, telemedicine, and data analytics can help overcome some barriers to access and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. —Global Collaboration International cooperation and knowledge sharing are vital to addressing global health challenges. Partnerships between countries, organizations, and communities can help spread best practices and innovative solutions. International Healthcare Quality Week is a call to action for all stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem to commit to improving the quality of care. By addressing the impediments to healthcare and implementing strategies for continuous improvement, societies can work towards achieving equitable and high-quality healthcare for all.

Pastoral Care Week: October 19-25

06:20 AM | -
Organizations and institutions worldwide will recognize the spiritual needs of those we serve and the spiritual care given through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling within our communities. Regardless of spiritual, religious, or cultural background, Pastoral Care Week celebrates those who provide spiritual support to others. It is supported by the Coalition On Ministry In Specialized Settings Network: The Network on Ministries in Specialized Settings, whose members provide care in specialized settings such as hospitals, prisons, businesses, industries, long-term care facilities, pastoral counseling centers, hospices, military settings, nursing homes, corporations, congregations of sisters, priests and brothers, schools and universities throughout the world. Many institutions will celebrate Pastoral Care Week by honoring the work and gifts of pastoral/spiritual caregivers locally and internationally, as well as the spiritual needs of those who serve. Among the celebrations are hand-blessing ceremonies for health workers, open houses, poetry jams by clients, lecture series, and luncheons. Pastoral/Spiritual Care week provides a unique opportunity to both have a conversation to address suffering related to loss and trauma and to seek opportunities for strengthening spiritual resilience amid them.

PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.
