Porridge is a national dish of Scotland. In addition to fundraising activities, an annual World Porridge Making Championship occurs in the village of Carrbridge.

Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) and observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan or seeing the moon. World Squittleday, a combination of squid and cuttlefish, celebrates the squid and cuttlefish, one of four species of cephalopods. Squid and cuttlefish look similar; squid are speedy predators, and cuttlefish take their time, moving slowly. Squid look like torpedoes, whereas cuttlefish are broader and a little roomier. Both have internal shells. Cephalopods are a species of marine animals and include squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. There are over 800 species worldwide, and they've been with us for over 300,000 years. Each year, marine scientists across the globe celebrate International Cephalopods Awareness Days in October as a teaching tool and a call for marine environmental preservation.

Tomorrowland is the biggest electronic music festival in the world. Tomorrowland Brazil is a spin-off of the popular electronic dance music (EDM) festival Tomorrowland, which originated in Boom, Belgium. Tomorrowland is an immersive, fantastical-themed music extravaganza with a world-class DJ line-up and elaborate stage designs, drawing fans from all over the globe. Tomorrowland Brazil began in Itu, São Paulo, in May 2015 and ran for two years through 2016. Due to financial issues and the challenging economic situation in Brazil at the time, the festival was suspended. In 2023, it returned to Brazil and sold out several months in advance. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Alex Odeh Day (1985): October 11

SEEKING JUSTICE FOR THE ASSASSINATION OF A CIVIL RIGHTS. ADVOCATE: ALEX ODEH DAY Alex Odeh, an American human rights activist of Palestinian origin and the regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), was assassinated when the group's offices in Santa Ana, California, were bombed on October 11, 1985. The FBI quickly identified the terrorist group, the Jewish Defense League (JDL), as the primary suspect, linking the attack to a series of other bombings committed by the group during the 1970s and 1980s. Odeh’s assassination is believed to be in retaliation for his public defense of Palestinians following the 1985 hijacking of the ship the Achille Lauro. As the event became known, Israeli spokespeople immediately and falsely accused the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) of the hijacking. However, after weeks of investigation and based on overwhelming evidence, it became clear the PLO had nothing to do with it. Odeh appeared in national media and on national television, refuting that the hijacking was a Palestinian-led operation. He was assassinated shortly thereafter in 1985. Odeh would be proven correct in 1992. The PLO was not responsible for the Achille Lauro hijacking nor the death of disabled American Leon Klinghoffer during the action. This fact became known in the year of the publication of the exposé book "Profits of War" (page 122) by former Israeli Defense Forces Senior Intelligence Officer Ari Ben-Menashe. Ben-Menashe had direct knowledge of the event and made it clear that the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) had nothing to do with the Achille Lauro hijacking. It was, he disclosed, a black flag operation by Israeli intelligence designed to place blame and delegitimize the PLO. At the time, the Palestinian cause was gaining sympathy, and international support for Israel's actions was waning. Israel reversed this trend by presenting the hijacking as a terrorist act by Palestinians. ESCAPING JUSTICE Robert and Rochelle Manning, Keith Fuchs and Andy Green are the people suspected of the bombing and Odeh's assassination. The Mannings were known to the FBI as JDL terrorists. Individually and through associations, the group amassed a significant list of attacks against Arab Americans and related organizations in the United States beginning in the late 1960s. After the Odeh assassination, the suspects fled the United States for Israel and became part of the West Bank settler movement. Mr. Manning was extradited to the United States in 1993 from Israel and was sentenced to 30 years for an unrelated terrorist attack. The US Government paroled him in October 2023. His wife died in an Israeli prison, also incarcerated for unrelated terrorist acts. Fuchs and Green have never faced justice and continue to live free in Israel. Green, also known as Baruch Ben Yosef, is a leading figure in the blockades preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza (a war crime) during the current genocide. Despite solid evidence and their identification as the terrorists responsible for the assassination, none have been charged with Odeh’s murder. ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF A US CONGRESSMAN Following the assassination of Odeh, the JDL remained active in the United States. In 2001, the group bombed newly elected California Congressman Darryl Issa’s offices. He, too, is of Arab descent and, like Odeh (and 35% of Arab Americans), Christian. Issa survived, became a successful tech entrepreneur and continues to serve in the House of Representatives. The ADC established Alex Odeh Day to honor his legacy as they seek accountability for his murder and recognition of his contributions to human rights.

International Migratory Bird Day occurs on the second Saturday in May in the U.S. and Canada and on the 2nd Saturday in October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean each year. But we recognize that this date doesn't work well for all bird events, bird festival organizers, or migratory birds. To the south, migratory birds have left, heading for breeding sites to the north. Farther north, the birds haven't arrived. We remedied this problem by removing the month and day from our bird education and festival materials, leaving only the year, and reminding groups every day is bird day. Now, IMBD is celebrated almost year-round. Most U.S. and Canada events occur in April and May, while fall events are the norm in the Caribbean and Latin America. Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can significantly contribute to maintaining healthy bird populations. By modeling what can be done and involving people, their interest and involvement in stewardship can grow. One of the most successful vehicles for public education on migratory birds is International Migratory Bird Day(IMBD). Across the Americas, Bird Day events are great ways to get involved. Coming Out Day, Intl., (1987): October 11

International Coming Out Day is an LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, and Queer) community initiative to provide a safe day for LGBTQ+ persons to embrace their inner selves. When an LGBTQ+ person goes public with their sexuality, it is referred to as "Coming Out." It's an act that used to be very personal and often difficult; however, public declarations are celebrated in earnest by the LGBTQ+ community, and social media is filled with declarations on this day. Religious teachings in the Abrahamic faiths are against the lifestyle. Many feel shunned by their friends and family or targeted for declaring they are homosexual, bisexual, or any of the other 50+ iterations earning banners in the past 15 years. Coming Out Day provides instant acceptance, affirmation, and community access, to those outing, regardless of the opinions rendered on their decision. October 11, 1987, saw the first national march on Washington for lesbian and gay rights. The following year, 1988, October 11 became the official International Coming Out Day.

DAR Day of Service (1890): October 11

Founded in 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a civic organization of female descendants of American fighters from the Revolutionary War. Each year since 2014, on or near the anniversary of their founding on October 11, 1890, members devote a day to serving the community. Activities include -Collecting and donating goods and toiletries for local food pantries and women’s shelters; - Writing letters and compiling care packages for deployed troops; - Cleaning up local historic homes and restoring headstones in cemeteries; - Packing backpacks with meals and goods for young students in need; and - Picking up trash and debris along local waterways and parks. Girl Child, International Day of the: October 11

Double trouble and double fun, the annual World Twins Festival in Igbo-Ora, Nigeria, hosts over one thousand pairs of twins, many in matching outfits. Igbo-Ora has an unusually high birth rate for twins, and doctors are curious if diet or genetically passed-on hormone levels create this unique situation. Whatever the cause, Igbo-Ora is twice as fun, with international twins arriving to join the twins of Igbo-Ora each year. The timing of this event can vary wildly each year, occurring during the Spring, Summer, or Fall.
