Particularly in Roman Catholic and Protestant-majority countries, Holy Week covers Palm Sunday through Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. It is a week-long celebration in the Philippines, Latin America, Palestine, Italy, Spain, Lebanon, and within Christian communities throughout the globe (Orthodox Christians celebrate one week later). In many of these countries, festivals occur throughout the week, and it is a holiday.

Holy Experiment Day (1681): March 4

Holy Experiment Day marks an auspicious day in American History. On March 4, 1681, William Penn received a charter from King Charles II of England granting Penn specifically, and the Quakers by default, sole ownership, and rule over 45,000 square miles. It later became the state of Pennsylvania. But why 'Holy Experiment' to mark the anniversary? The term dates back to the Quaker movement in the United States. Upon arriving in the New World, their objective was to create a faith-based community where they could live their lives according to the tenants of their faith. The first settlement they founded was Salem in 1675, and that experiment went a little array with the infamous Salem Witch Trials. With the receipt of land from the King, the center of the Holy Experiment moved to Penn's Woods or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on this day in 1681.

Holika Dahan (H): March 3

Holika Dahan is a Hindu ritual that occurs on Holi's eve after the sun's setting. A bonfire is prepared days ahead to destroy dark forces and, upon lighting, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the burning of the devil. People sing and dance around the fire. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Holi (H): March 3

One of the major festivals of the Hindu faith, Holi, is celebrated with enthusiasm at the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. There is no more colorful holiday than Holi. Like Carnaval in Brazil, Holi is something you must experience in person at least once. Everywhere you go in India, Holi is visible. On the sides of the road, you’ll see piles of gulal/abir (multi-colored powder) during the days leading up to the festival. Pichkaris, which look like a water guns, are essential to Holi. Children play with pichkaris filled with gulal, fine sand, and water, running around and dousing each other, thus covering everyone and everything in color. Essentially, the dull grey colors of winter are erased. The holiday is also a celebration of family, faith, and hope. Gujia, a sweet dumpling, is central to the Holi celebration. Women prepare Gujia at home and share them with their friends, family, and neighbors. On the eve of Holi, Holika Dahan, effigies of the devil are roasted on a pyre. Hemophilia, Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, Ntl.: March

Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, formerly Hemophilia Awareness Month, focuses on the genetic blood disease that prevents blood from clotting usually. Due to its prevalence in monarchies, Hemophilia earned the nickname "Royal Disease." Queen Victoria of England (1837-1901) was a carrier of the hemophilia gene. Her eighth child Leopold suffered from frequent bleeding, which was reported in the British Medical Journal in 1868. Hemophilia has been known for thousands of years. The Talmud, a collection of Jewish rabbinical writings from the second century of the Common Era, notes exempts male babies from circumcision if two brothers had already died from the procedure. By the 1990s, the safety and efficacy of factor concentrate improved. In 1992, the first recombinant factor VIII product received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 1997, factor IX products captured FDA approval. Additional synthetic drugs, including desmopressin acetate (DDAVP), which treat mild-to-moderate Hemophilia A and Von Willebrand disease, also were introduced. By the mid-1990s, prophylactic (a preventative treatment regimen) therapy in children with hemophilia became more common. Since the advent of prophylaxis, children could look forward to a life of less pain due to chronic bleeding. Today, hemophiliac children attain long, healthy, and active lives. This event first occurred in 1986.

HeForShe Arts Week: March 8-15

Have you ever noticed that very few of the classic artists are women? There is Louise Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, Berthe Morisot, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Mary Cassatt. Still, it is hard to find more than a couple of women per century among the esteemed legends. Is that because women do not have talent? No. Women weren't allowed to be artists (painters, sculptors, and such) until the past 150 years. It's better today, but the professional art world is still overly represented by men. United Nations Women created He For She Arts Week to elevate authentic female artists and press for their equality in art worldwide. This event first ran in 2016.
