Today is the anniversary of Patrick Henry's "Liberty" speech on March 23, 1775. In that speech, he said, "I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death." Just hours earlier, the British began their march on Concord, which would see the opening shots of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.

Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) are distinguishable from other winged insects because their wings are covered in scales. Most butterflies and moths are very colorful. The antenna of butterflies has notches at the end, bent somewhat to look like a golf club. Moths have antennas like cat's whiskers, long and ending in a point. Butterflies live on the nectar of flowers and, like bees, help with pollination. The average lifespan of a butterfly is three to four weeks. Labour Day in Australia is a national holiday, but it is complicated as each province has its day to celebrate, which can occur in March, May, or October. West Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria provinces observe in March., albeit on different days. Labour Day represents the international celebration of organized labor and was conceived first in North America. A conference of American and Canadian unions in 1884 declared May 1, 1886, as a day of strike action in support of the eight-hour day. In Chicago, a crowd of 80,000 workers was attacked by police, and six workers were gunned down. In subsequent protests, another 11 workers were killed. A further seven workers were arrested, of whom four were hanged, and a fifth killed himself to cheat the noose. Two others received life sentences. In Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported in 1890 that in Vienna, the wealthy business owners and elites were so unnerved by worker support for May Day that they placed their valuables in banks' custody. Two years earlier, Australian workers rallied to the cause of British dockworkers during the famous Dockers Strike of 1888. Of $48,000 contributed from overseas, more than $30,000 was sent by Australian workers. In 1891 squatters in Queensland determined to break the Shearers union employed scab labor. The Shearers and the Queensland government sent police and armed troops to arrest strikers. A call to create an international day during the nineteenth century failed due to ideological splits within the trade union movement. May Day gathered in strength in Australia and is now part of the worldwide celebration recognizing labor. However, Australia's territories maintained state-supported Labour Days throughout the year.

National Kidney Health Month occurs in March in the United States and Canada. In addition to a month-long awareness campaign, World Kidney Day occurs in the middle of March, and the United Kingdom devotes a whole week to Kidney health in May. The purpose of this month is to educate the public about Kidney Disease, what causes it, and what you can due to minimize your chances of getting it. WHAT IS KIDNEY DISEASE? Chronic kidney disease is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality or marker, such as protein in the urine, and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer. There are many causes of chronic kidney disease. The kidneys may be affected by diabetes and high blood pressure, and some kidney conditions are inherited (run in families). Others are congenital; individuals may be born with an abnormality that can affect their kidneys. The following are some of the most common types and causes of kidney damage. Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not make enough insulin or cannot correctly use it, resulting in a high blood sugar level, which can cause problems in many parts of your body. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is another common cause of kidney disease and other complications such as heart attacks and strokes. High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls increases. Glomerulonephritis is a disease that causes inflammation of the kidney's tiny filtering units called the glomeruli. Glomerulonephritis may happen suddenly, for example, after strep throat, and the individual may get well again. However, the disease may develop slowly over several years, and it may cause progressive loss of kidney function. Polycystic kidney disease is the most common inherited kidney disease. It is characterized by the formation of kidney cysts that enlarge over time and may cause severe kidney damage and even kidney failure. Other inherited diseases that affect the kidneys include Alport's Syndrome, primary hyperoxaluria, and cystinuria. Kidney stones are prevalent; they may cause severe pain in your back and side when they pass. There are many possible causes of kidney stones, including an inherited disorder that causes too much calcium to be absorbed from foods and urinary tract infections or obstructions. Medications and diet can help to prevent recurrent stone formation. In cases where stones are too large to pass, treatments may be done to remove them or break them down into small pieces that can pass out of the body. Urinary tract infections occur when germs enter the urinary tract and cause symptoms such as pain or burning during urination and a more frequent need to urinate. These infections most often affect the bladder, but they sometimes spread to the kidneys and may cause fever and pain in your back. Congenital diseases may also affect the kidneys. These usually involve problems in the urinary tract when a baby is developing in its mother's womb. One of the most common occurs when a valve-like mechanism between the bladder and ureter (urine tube) fails to work correctly and allows urine to back up (reflux) to the kidneys, causing infections and possible kidney damage. Drugs and toxins can also cause kidney problems. Using large numbers of over-the-counter pain relievers for a long time may harm the kidneys. Certain medications, toxins, pesticides, and street drugs, such as heroin and crack, can also cause kidney damage.
