April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Parkinson's Awareness Week occurs during the week of World Parkinson's Disease Day, mid-month. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive movement disorder, meaning symptoms continue and worsen over time. Nearly one million people in the US are living with Parkinson's disease. The cause is unknown, and although there is no cure, there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptoms. Passover (Pesach)(J): April 1-9

Passover, or Pesach, falls on the Hebrew calendar dates of Nissan 23-30 and is a week-long celebration. In the Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year-to-year. Passover is an important Jewish holiday straight from the Torah and Bible. It commemorates the Hebrew people's liberation by God from Egyptian slavery and the formation of their nation (a collective of people, not a nation-state) under the leadership of Moses. It is called Passover because the Angel of Death passed over the homes of Hebrew slaves marked with lamb's blood on this night. The firstborn of non-Hebrews were killed as a warning to Pharaoh in homes not marked. This final plague of ten convinced Pharaoh to free the Hebrews from slavery. Christians also mark Passover as part of Passiontide, but it is a single day. However, Christians do not follow the rituals of Judaism in observing Passover.

Pecan Month, Ntl.: April

National Pecan Month is sponsored each year by the National Pecan Sheller's Association, and it is a time to celebrate this American fruit. That's right, fruit, not a nut. Pecans are a common ingredient in bread, cakes, salads, and cookies, plus they make delicious pies. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six years old. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. Turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids so they told us kids, all four of us, that you had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them...and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it so! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can eat pecan pie only once they are adults. They might believe you!"

National Pest Management Association (NPMA) promotes National Pest Management Month, recognizing the pest management industry's commitment to protecting public health and property from common household pests. During April, homeowners are encouraged to pest-proof their homes in preparation for the upcoming pest season. NPMA experts recommend the following tips: 1) Seal cracks and holes outside the home, including entry points for utilities and pipes. 2) Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles. 3) Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows. 4) Keep tree branches and shrubbery well-trimmed away from the house. 5) Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground. 6) Eliminate sources of standing water around the house, including birdbaths and clogged gutters. 7) Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well-ventilated and dry. 8) Keep kitchen counters clean and store food in sealed containers. 9) Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly. 10) Avoid leaving pet food dishes out for long periods. "As the weather continues to get warmer, pests will begin to emerge from their overwintering sites and look for food indoors. National Pest Management Month comes at the perfect time to make pest-proofing a priority to prevent an infestation during the spring and summer seasons," adds Henriksen.

The International Day of Zero Waste is dedicated to promoting sustainable consumption and production practices and raising awareness about the contributions of zero-waste initiatives to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The waste sector is a significant contributor to the global environmental challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Each year, billions of tons of municipal solid waste and plastic waste enter ecosystems, while millions of tons of food are lost or wasted. Zero-waste initiatives can address these issues by promoting responsible waste management, minimizing waste generation, and preventing pollution. Adopting a zero-waste approach involves responsible production, consumption, and disposal in a closed, circular system. This includes designing products to be durable and using fewer resources, reducing pollution and waste throughout their life cycle. Consumers also play a crucial role by changing their habits, reusing and repairing products, and disposing of them properly. Achieving zero waste requires collective action at all levels. Governments, communities, industries, and stakeholders need to invest in waste management infrastructure, improve recovery systems, and support zero-waste initiatives through financing and policymaking. The Global Strategy for Sustainable Consumption and Production, established by the United Nations General Assembly, provides guidance for this transition by promoting sustainable consumption and production practices across all sectors by 2030.
