MORMON DAY MARKING THE BEGINNING OF A NEW FAITH Mormon Day marks the establishment of the Mormon faith, formerly the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), on April 6, 1830. On this day at Peter Whitmer Senior's farm in Fayette, New York, the founding members of the religion Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Peter Whitmer, Jr., Samuel H Smith, and David Whitmer organized the doctrine and declared the faith. THE LDS FAITH The faith's founder, Joseph Smith, is revered as a prophet by his followers. He reported that in 1820, at 14, he experienced a vision of God and Jesus Christ in western New York. This vision led to the founding of the faith as he shared his experience with others. Mormonism shares several core beliefs with mainstream Christianity, including the divinity of Jesus Christ and a belief in the Bible. However, it also has distinct differences. The foundations of the faith follow the Book of Mormon, which includes unique doctrines concerning the nature of God and the afterlife. The church rapidly grew, and after Smith's death, Brigham Young led the members to the Utah Territory. To this day, Utah has the largest concentration of Mormons globally. ORIGIN OF MORMON "Mormon" comes from the Book of Mormon, the sacred text of The LDS Church. According to the text, Mormon was an ancient prophet who compiled and summarized his people's spiritual and secular histories engraved on golden plates. Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, claimed to have translated these plates into English and published them as the Book of Mormon shortly before the church's founding in 1830. The nickname "Mormons" was initially used by outsiders and gradually adopted by church members themselves, though they primarily identified as Latter-day Saints. In recent years, the LDS Church has encouraged a move away from the nickname "Mormon" to emphasize its Christian doctrine and focus on Jesus Christ, urging both members and others to use the church's full name or refer to its members as Latter-day Saints. Mormon Day reinforces the communal bonds among members. It serves as a reminder of their religious and historical roots, celebrating perseverance, faith, and community—the core tenets that continue to define the LDS Church today.

Few things are more ubiquitous or emblematic of American culture than the golden log shape shortcake filled with cream named after Twinkle Toe Shoes. James Dewar of Continental Baking in River Forest, Illinois, invented it. Known as Twinkie, this lunch box-size dessert is jokingly rumored to stay fresh for up to a hundred years (due to preservatives) and has been a favorite childhood (and adult comfort food) ever since.
