While we often take their fabulous fur for granted and view their grooming as cute, hairballs are not a joke but a vital part of a cat's hygiene.

Immunization saves millions of lives and is one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Yet, more than 19 million unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children worldwide are at serious risk of these potentially fatal diseases. Of these children, one in ten never received any vaccinations and most likely has never been seen by the health system. World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, aims to highlight the collective action needed to ensure that every person is protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Multilateralism refers to cooperation between at least three states based on shared norms and values, involving consultation, inclusion, and solidarity. It is a method of cooperation and an organizational framework of the international system. The United Nations plays a central role in multilateralism, with the Charter defining its mission to promote peace, human rights, and international cooperation. Over the years, multilateral processes have expanded, including new actors like NGOs and private organizations. Multilateralism has achieved significant results in areas such as health and arms control, saving lives and advancing human rights. The UN emphasizes conflict prevention through diplomacy and peaceful dispute settlement. In recognition of the importance of multilateralism, the General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace to promote its benefits and raise awareness about the role of diplomacy in maintaining international peace and security.

Newspaper Day, American (1704): April 24

On April 24, 1704, America's first continuously-published newspaper, the Boston News-Letter, published its first issue. John Campbell, a bookseller and postmaster of Boston was its first editor. It appeared on a single page, printed on both sides, and was issued weekly. The first recorded newspaper was the Acta Diurna (Daily News) in Julius Caesar's Rome in 59 BC.

Antiqua Sailing Week (AG): April 25 - May 1

Antigua Sailing Week started in 1968 when friends and hoteliers got together to hold a regatta (sailboat or yacht race). Antigua Hotel Association sponsored the first Antigua Sailing Week, which occurred June 8-15, 1968. Festivities included a three-day ‘Lord Nelson Regatta’ with sailing yachts of up to 135 feet in length, power boat races, deep sea fishing, and Sunfish sailing contests. There was also a two-day race among Antigua’s workboat fishermen. The inaugural Antigua Sailing Week was a huge success and repeated the following year, with dates moved up to May 31 through June 7, 1969. And so it went each subsequent year, with new sponsors coming on board and the program of events growing and evolving.

International Delegate's Day, observed on 25 April, celebrates the vital role of delegates in the United Nations. Delegates represent their countries in UN meetings and negotiations, speaking and voting on behalf of their governments. They embody the principles of multilateralism and work towards fulfilling the goals of the UN, such as maintaining peace, promoting human rights, and strengthening global cooperation. The day commemorates the first day of the San Francisco Conference in 1945, where delegates from 50 countries gathered to establish the United Nations and create a peaceful world order. The conference resulted in the signing of the UN Charter on 26 June 1945. Through the proclamation of International Delegate's Day, the General Assembly recognizes and honors the contributions of delegates in advancing the work of the United Nations.

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic and why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - a record amount of prescription drugs. The DEA sponsors a Drug Take Back Day each April and October to make disposal of expired or no longer needed medications safe and easy.
