Who doesn’t love babies? They’re so cute, curious, and just plain lovable! National Baby Day has no sponsor and is an unofficial holiday in early May, a week before Mother’s Day. It’s an opportunity for retailers to have sales and moms to show off the latest edition to the family. Like many events in the LEEP, this came into being simply by people proclaiming and celebrating it. Enjoy National Baby Day.

It’s also a great day to get your finances in order, check 401K balances, and plan for your future so that one day you aren’t just playing at being a millionaire—you have become one! Bear in mind that becoming a millionaire is no easy task, and although luck is needed, most millionaires make their fortune by grinding, working, and never giving up. Be Kind to Animals Week: May 3-9

Created in 1915, Be Kind to Animals Week® is one of the longest-running consecutive annual awareness weeks. Organized by the American Humane Association. Every year, an estimated four million animals must be euthanized at our nation's shelters because they cannot find loving homes. Help animals find a second chance at happiness by adopting your next pet from your local shelter or rescue group. American Humane Association has tips for finding the right animal companion for you and developing a bond that will last a lifetime. A few ways to celebrate this day are: taking care of your pet, appreciating wildlife, reporting animal abuse, and adopting a pet.

Beaufort Day (1774): May 27

Sir Francis Beaufort, the Beaufort wind force scale inventor, was born on May 27, 1774. His device measures wind force without the use of special instruments. He created it while serving as a Royal Navy officer on HMS Woolwich in 1805. The Beaufort Scale was used in shipping forecasts for England and adapted for international use in 1874. Today it is used by the Netherlands, Germany, China, Malta, Greece, and Taiwan. Though other methods of measuring wind were devised years prior, Sir Beaufort standardized it to capture wind speeds of 22 knots to 64 knots.

Bees and other pollinators play a crucial role in our environment, as they help pollinate crops and plants, which in turn helps maintain biodiversity and support food production. Many of the foods we rely on without bees and other pollinators cease to exist. The observance of World Bee Day aims to highlight the critical role bees and other pollinators play in our environment and promote the conservation and sustainable use of these essential creatures. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the threats facing bees and other pollinators, such as habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. To celebrate World Bee Day, many organizations and individuals worldwide organize events, such as educational programs, beekeeping workshops, and plantings of bee-friendly habitats. The observance of World Bee Day allows people to come together to appreciate and protect these vital creatures.

Beverage Day, Ntl.: May 6

National Beverage Day occurs each year in May. It is likely this event first ran in the early twentieth century (1921) as part of a promotion by a bottling plant Re-Ly-On Bottler during Prohibition to assure the public of the safety of bottled drinks. At the time, food-borne diseases were common in unpasteurized beverages. Alcohol killed bacteria, but due to the Volstead Act was now illegal. The creation of Bottled Carbonated Beverage Day (later shortened to Beverage Day), espousing the virtues of carbonation in eliminating bacteria, was the focus of the campaign. In 1925 the association representing commercial bottlers chose the first Wednesday of May for their annual campaign. National Beverage Day celebrates what we drink, from water and soda to milk, juice, and beer. Several restaurants around the United States and Canada mark this day by offering free drinks with meal purchases. On National Beverage Day, it doesn’t hurt to ask where you dine today if they offer complimentary beverages. Note: The traditional date for this event is the first Wednesday of May each year. Sometime in the last 30 years, people began marking it on May sixth. There is no historical context, patent, or organization sponsoring the event to tie it to May sixth.

Big Day of Giving: May 7

The Sacramento region will come together for one BIG Day of Giving, a challenge to support local nonprofits beginning at midnight for the next 24 hours. Donations on this day will help expand programs nationwide and locally. Though Big Day of Giving is currently a regional program, the nonprofit wants to expand this program nationwide and internationally in the coming years and welcomes inquiries.
