Foreign Service Workers Day: May 1

US Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), co-founders of the Senate Foreign Service Caucus, are introducing a resolution designating May 1, 2020, as “United States Foreign Service Day” in recognition of the men and women who have served, or are presently serving, in the Foreign Service of the United States and honoring the members of the Foreign Service who have given their lives in the line of duty. Foreign Service Day has been celebrated on the first Friday in May for generations; 2020 marks 96 years since the establishment of the Foreign Service in 1924. The Foreign Service, comprising 16,000 US personnel, plus 75,000 locally-engaged personnel who serve at embassies and consulates overseas, are members of the Department of State, the US Agency for International Development, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Agriculture, the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service, and the US Agency for Global Media. “Across the globe, American Foreign Service Officers work tirelessly to protect and promote our country’s best interests. As we’ve faced new challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, you’ve worked overtime to help Americans abroad and to bring many home. Your efforts are vital to our nation, and I’m proud to recognize your hard work and immense contributions in celebration of the 96th Foreign Service Day,” said Senator Van Hollen. “I’d like to salute the members of the Foreign Service on the occasion of the 96th anniversary of the founding of this crucial diplomatic corps,” said Senator Sullivan. “Your day-in and day-out work—engaging governments, businesses and individuals around the world—strengthens our national security, assists our citizens, and promotes US interests abroad. Additionally, at an unprecedented time for our country, your relentless efforts in assisting thousands of our citizens, including Alaskans, to return home is one more example of the invaluable contributions of our Foreign Service.”

DEMYSTIFYING DEATH WEEK Demystifying Death Week is a Scotland-wide awareness week that invites communities to bring honest, practical conversations about death, dying, grief, loss, and care into the open. The goal is simple: help people feel more confident talking about the end of life—before a crisis—so they can plan ahead, support others, and know where to turn for help. The week traces its roots to Scotland’s first “death awareness week” in 2013, which encouraged local, grassroots events each May and has continued to grow as more organizations and communities join in. It is coordinated by Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief, a collaborative network hosted by Scotland’s palliative care partnership that supports people who want to improve how their communities respond to serious illness, dying, and bereavement. Why it matters: many people want to help when someone is seriously ill or grieving—but don’t know what to say, worry they’ll make things worse, or aren’t sure who to ask for reliable guidance. Demystifying Death Week addresses that hesitation by offering knowledge, language, and shared spaces for discussion. The week often explores questions people quietly carry, such as: “What actually happens when someone is dying—and what can families expect?” “How do I start a conversation about wishes for care, funerals, or where someone wants to be at the end of life?” “What should I say to a friend who’s grieving—and what should I avoid?” “What does it mean to plan ahead—like making choices known, naming decision-makers, or documenting preferences?” “Where can I find support for carers or bereavement help in my area?” Participation is flexible and community-led. People and organizations host activities ranging from death cafés and discussion groups to film screenings, talks, craft workshops, theatre, seminars, and information stands—in person or online. Individuals can join by attending an event, sharing trusted resources, checking in on someone who is grieving, or using the week as a prompt to talk with family about care preferences and support needs.
