Johnny Appleseed Day (1845): March 18*

Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist, and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds for lodging, old clothing, and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22. Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims. Both settlers and Native Americans respected Appleseed. He spoke several languages, protected the environment, and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants. The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.

Located at approximately 160 farms and museums across New York State, Maple Weekend offers a delicious, fun-filled outing with a little something for all maple lovers to taste and experience. Happy Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day. There are two standards for oatmeal cookies: the thick round cookies and the thin Florentine wafers known as Lacy Oatmeal Cookies. These crispy wafers are often seen in ice cream parlors decorating a sundae. However, they're good if you need to nip a craving. Oatmeal entered the American diet in the early nineteenth century. Cookies or "oat cakes" quickly followed.

Panther, Save the Florida Panther Day: March 18

In 2015, Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott created Save the Florida Panther Day, allocating $150 million toward land acquisition and management to focus on protecting land for the Florida panther. The historic funding and focus on Florida's ecosystem ensure and protects the Florida panther and its domain. The Florida panther once roamed throughout the southeastern United States, and today, it can only be found in the forests and Everglades. In 1967, ten panthers remained in the wild, and eight breeding females were brought in from Texas. Today that number is closer to 200. On Jul 24, 2021, the state passed the Wildlife Corridor Act, facilitating the movement of the big cats within their territories, proving that despite the rhetoric, Florida does care about its environment. Though Florida has lost its way of late, in years and decades past, the state was a critical and outspoken advocate for conservation and the environment, including championing its own Arbor Day and protecting the Everglades and endangered species while raising awareness about wetlands and the necessity of biodiversity. In fact, until the 1990s, conservative Americans strongly valued environmental causes, including Republican presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Richard Nixon. Play the Recorder Day: March 18

Play the Recorder Day celebrates the woodwind instrument that looks like a flute called a recorder. It has been held annually since 1993 during March, Play the Recorder Month. On this day, the American Recorder Society holds concerts and lessons throughout the country in public spaces, including libraries, schools, and shopping malls.

Quilts are a time-honored tradition and means of storytelling and are often passed down from generation to generation. This event was created in 1992 by the National Quilting Association; the Quilt Alliance now hosts the event.

Recycling Day, Global: March 18

Global Recycling Day was launched in 2018 to recognize and celebrate the natural resources of our planet and the necessity of giving each a new life. The day's mission is two-fold: 1) To tell world leaders that recycling is too important not to be a global issue and that a joined-up approach to recycling is urgently needed. 2) To ask people across the planet to think of resources, not waste when it comes to the goods around us. We will only award recycled goods their actual value and repurpose them as they deserve once this happens.

Shabbat HaChodesh (J): March 18

Shabbat Ha Chodesh is the Saturday that precedes the Hebrew month of Nisan and the Passover celebration. Shabbat is "Sabbath" or "Saturday" in Hebrew. On the first day of Nisan, the first commandment on how to "sanctify the new moon" is given by God. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. Tomorrowland Winter (FR): March 18-25

Tomorrowland added Tomorrowland Winter in the Alpe d'Huez, France, in 2019. Tomorrowland is the biggest electronic music festival in the world. Held in Belgium, it includes electronic shows, live music, and one-of-a-kind shows. The event is simulcast to local venues in Abu Dhabi, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Mexico, Spain, and Taiwan.
