Araw Ng Kagitingan, or the Day of Valor in the Philippines, marks the anniversary of the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. Locally it is commemorated through the re-enactment of the Death March. The Japanese army took control of 76,000 Filipino and American soldiers, already near death and starving. They marched them 87 miles. Of the original 76,000, only 54,000 reached their final destination of Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. Today is the day Filipinos mark the loss of their countrymen, who accounted for 92 percent of the total prisoners. Araw Ng Kagitingan is a national observance.

Deir Yassin Massacre (1948): April 9

Early on the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of Menachem Begin's Irgun and the Stern Gang, classified as Zionist terrorist groups internationally, attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 750 Palestinian residents located outside of the area assigned by the United Nations for the establishment of the state of Israel. The town had a peaceful reputation but was situated on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, making it strategically desirable to the attacking forces. Deir Yassin was slated for occupation under Plan Dalet, the plan created over the previous ten years detailing the Zionist conquest of Palestine. The massacre of its inhabitants occurred under the direction of the predecessor of today's Israel Defense Force, the Haganah, which authorized the Irgun and the Stern Gang to massacre the village's inhabitants. Over 100 men, women, and children were slaughtered and murdered at Deir Yassin. Fifty-three children were orphaned, and the Zionist terrorists callously dumped them along the wall of Jerusalem's Old City, where Miss Hind Husseini found them. She brought the children to relative safety at the American Colony Hotel, and her home would become the Dar El-Tifl El-Arabi orphanage. This event is one of 35 massacres and hundreds of smaller attacks occurring in Palestine during the six months preceding the formation of the state of Israel. More would follow upon statehood. The Arab nations would not attack Israel and its forces until it became a state. They entered the fight on May 15, 1948. Israelis refer to this period as a War for Independence. The people living on the land, the Christians, Druze, and Muslims, refer to it as the Nakba, or The Great Catastrophe. The ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Zionist forces between December 1947 and 1949 is one of the foundational issues causing the continuation of hostilities, the emergence of apartheid, and the unending occupation of the Holy Land. The massacre is remembered by its victims and largely denied or dismissed by its perpetrators. Throughout their ethnic cleansing, Zionist terrorists forced the removal of over 700,000 people from their homes in Palestine between November 30, 1947, and 1949. Under international law, prohibiting the residents' repatriation, which continues today by the state of Israel, is a war crime. Many of these Christian, Druze, and Muslim refugees still hold the keys to the homes they fled. Today the number of Palestinian refugees worldwide exceeds six million, with many made refugees twice after the Six-Day war in 1967 when the remainder of Jordan's West Bank, Syria's Golan Heights, and Egypt's Gaza fell under Israeli occupation. PLEASE NOTE: Zionism is a political idealogy that promotes Jewish supremacy over the whole of historic Palestine. Zionism is not Judaism, nor is it or has it ever been part of the Jewish faith. The majority of Zionists today are Evangelical Christians who promote Zionism to expedite their interpretation of the "Book of Revelation" and Armageddon. This form of Christianity is referred to as Christian Zionism or Dispensationalism. It is a belief held by approximately 400 million, or 20 percent of Christians worldwide. Dispensationalism and Christian Zionism are not part of historic Christianity; most Christians reject it. It originated with a re-interpretation of the Bible in 1832 in Scotland and received a promotion in biblical footnotes added beginning in 1908.

Jenkins' Ear Day (UK)(1731): April 9

Wars start for all kinds of reasons, silly and not. In this case, British mariner Robert Jenkins' ear was the reason. Jenkins' ship, the Rebecca, was off the coast of Jamaica when the Spanish Coast Guard sacked the vessel and cut off Jenkins' ear to send a message. Legend states that seven years later, he exhibited his ear in the House of Commons, regaling them with how he and his ear became detached. Outraged, the political body declared war on Spain. The War of Jenkins' Ear would last nearly four years, with hostilities simmering for nine.

Martyrs' Day (TN)(1938): April 9

On April 9, 1938, thousands of Tunisians took to the streets of Tunis, protesting French colonial rule and demanding a Tunisian parliament on their behalf. The French put down the protest, shooting into the crowd and killing 20 people. Martyrs' Day marks this event and commences the fight for independence. Tunisia would reach its aspiration on July 25, 1957.

Orthodox Palm Sunday, the beginning of Passiontide, the lead-up to the resurrection. The day commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem in 33AD, an event on which all four Gospels agree. The name is derived from the laying of palms on the road done by the people as He entered. Today it is customary for the faithful to carry palm leaves into a church to mark this auspicious event. In the Orthodox Christian faiths, holidays follow the Julian calendar and therefore fall on different days than those based upon the Gregorian calendar.

National Pan American Week falls yearly around National Pan American Day in the US, and it marks the anniversary of the formation of our Pan-American partnership. On April 14, 1890, delegates from countries throughout the Americas gathered in Washington, DC, united in the belief that cooperation would lead to a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous hemisphere. This event is created via a presidential proclamation. The purpose of this event is to commemorate the progress of the Pan-American nations and their efforts to continue working together in the pursuit of democracy and economic opportunity.

National Pet ID Week has one sole purpose: to raise awareness about the importance of updating your pet's identification tags and microchips. Each year tens of thousands of house pets go missing. Only two percent of cats and 15-20 percent of dogs, once lost, ever find their way home. Tagging your pet improves the chances your pet will return. Vets, pet stores, and shelters throughout the country support Pet ID Week. Check with your local entities for specials and resources. The American Humane Association began promoting National Pet ID Week in the 1980s, occurring annually during the third week of April (not on the fixed dates of April 17-23 noted on many calendar websites). The American Humane Association encourages pet owners to take the time to ensure their pets have proper identification and to keep their contact information up to date.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) occurs on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Winston Churchill Day (1963): April 9

Winston Churchill Day celebrates the anniversary of April 9, 1963, when President John F Kennedy bestowed an honorary US Citizenship on the former leader of Great Britain, Sir Winston Churchill. It is a rare occasion. Only the Marquis de LaFayette, a French national who helped the United States win its independence from Britain during the American Revolution, has received this honor. Unlike Lafayette, the US Congress resolved to bestow citizenship on Churchill via the President.

Yellow Ribbon Day, Ntl. (2004): April 9

Created by a congressional resolution, National Yellow Ribbon Day highlights the historical significance of the yellow ribbon symbol, first used in the United States to promote national unity and remembrance of the Americans held hostage in Iran. The resolution also notes that yellow ribbons were used to promote solidarity for US troops during the Persian Gulf War and that April 9th has been designated Yellow Ribbon Day in New York State since 2006. The resolution encourages Americans to wear yellow ribbons on this day to support current active duty troops.
