Party Day, World: April 3

Some people need an excuse to party. Enter World Party Day. Based upon the concept of creating universal unity where the whole world celebrates simultaneously, as detailed in the novel "Flight: A Quantum Fiction Novel," by Vanna Bonta. In the book, she speaks of a massive party on a worldwide scale happening simultaneously throughout the globe. The author passed away on July 8, 2014. However, her vision, World Party Day, is now an annual tradition.

Pony Express Day (1860): April 3

Pony Express Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the Pony Express on April 3, 1860. The first Pony Express sped the delivery of mail in the American West. It consisted of two horse and rider relay teams. The teams simultaneously left Saint Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Only ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider completed his task and delivered the mail packet after an approximately 1,800-mile-long journey to Sacramento. He beat the eastbound packet's arrival in St. Joseph by two days and set a new standard for mail delivery. Eventually, the railroad would replace the pony express riders, but their contribution to history in the Old West remains entrenched in Americana and the romance of that era.

Tweed Day remembers senator William 'Boss' Tweed leader of the 'Tweed Ring,' a corrupt political cabal that stole US$30-200 million in New York on April 3, 1823. Tweed Day is a reminder that nobody is above suspicion and that even those trusted to run our country sometimes abuse their position for personal gain. Rather than remember history, some people will use Tweed Day to celebrate the Scottish fabric used in suits, jackets, and trousers around the globe.

Annually on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "Mountain Top" speech, delivered April 3, 1968, Weed Out Hate Day is dedicated to rooting out hate in the office (and elsewhere). Hate takes the form of bullying, jealousy, anger, divisiveness, retribution, revenge, gossip, and other negative behaviors and emotions. Today, managers and staff are challenged to look for the seedlings of hate in their office and determine ways to weed them out constructively. Created by Marc Daniels of Springfield, Illinois, in 2013.

Wildlife Week, Ntl.(US/CA): April 3-7

The first National Wildlife Week ran March 20-26, 1938. At the time, its name was National Wildlife Restoration Week. Later it changed its name to National Wildlife Week. National Wildlife Week is the longest-running federal education program and awareness campaign in the United States. The purpose of the week is to increase awareness of the need to safeguard and preserve the wild places and wildlife of the United States for generations to come. Throughout the nation, local events encourage engagement.

Window Safety Week, Ntl.: April 3-9

Window Safety Week in April coincides with the arrival of spring, when homeowners naturally want to open the windows and let in the fresh air. Its goal is twofold: For families to understand the role of windows in escaping a fire or other emergency and to learn to safeguard against accidental window falls. Formed in 1997, the Window Safety Task Force works year-round in conjunction with NSC, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Safe Kids Worldwide, the International Code Council, and other safety advocates to promote window safety awareness. Members include representatives from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, the Window and Door Manufacturers Association, the Screen Manufacturers Association, and other organizations.

Cordon Bleu Day celebrates the decadent sandwich invented in the United States in 1967, the Cordon Bleu. The chicken Cordon Bleu is a piece of cheese wrapped in a slice of ham and stuffed inside a butterflied chicken breast which is breaded and fried. Previous versions used veal or pork pounded thin, then rolled around the stuffing, breaded, and fried.
