It was on January 4, 1872, Detroit native and journalist J. Sterling Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in Nebraska. He and his wife loved trees, and especially in the wind-prone areas of the American mid-west, the trees became essential in providing shelter, keeping soil secured, and for fuel. After some debate, the first American Arbor day occurred on April 10, 1872. Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for planting the most significant number of trees, and over one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. Today we celebrate Arbor Day on the last Friday in April in honor of J. Sterling Morton's birthday, April 22, 1832.

Cubicle Day, Ntl. (1967): April 28

Do you live in a cube farm during the day? There was a time when the cube walls were high enough to afford privacy. Now it is more likely to be an open floor plan with very little privacy that allows managers always to see everyone. Gone are the offices of middle management. Cube farms leave space for only the most senior people to have an actual door. The "corner office" quest is now the quest for a "door." National Cubicle Day marks the introduction of cubicles to the workforce on April 28, 1967. Robert Propst is the inventor of the cubicle, and he worked for Herman Miller at the time. Cubicles were created to subdivide open office spaces and give workers some privacy while promoting the free flow of ideas. Prior to cubicles, secretarial, knowledge, and low-level workers sat in open rows of desks with little or no privacy. At least cubicles gave them some. Federal Reserve Bank of New York was the first business to use an office formation similar to the cubicle in 1963. They formed the test case. Cubicles were an improvement fifty years ago. But like the airlines stripping us of our legroom and space, corporations realized they could fit more people into the room if they arranged the desks as tiny boxes, a concept contrary to why they were designed. Today they are hated by most workers. The creator of the original cubicle (Called Action Office II) had this to say in 1997 after seeing his invention in use. "The cubiclizing of people in modern corporations is monolithic insanity." As a former cube inhabitant, this writer must agree.

Detroit Music Awards (US-MI): April 28 (est)

Date is estimated. The actual date is set a few weeks before the event. The Detroit Music Awards Foundation (DMAF) was chartered in 1988 by a distinguished group of Detroit music and media professionals. The fledgling group held its first award show in 1992 at Detroit's Music Hall and moved to the State Theatre, its present location, in 1993. In 1998, the organization merged with the Metro Times-sponsored Detroit Music Awards. Now, the Detroit Music Awards Foundation is a single entity presenting the Detroit Music Awards each spring. In 2005, the ceremony was the opening event for the Motor City Music Conference (MC2) debut. DMAF awards are similar to the Grammy Awards presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Winners are determined by local musicians and music industry professionals in southeast Michigan and offered in ten music genres; Folk/Acoustic, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Country, Classical, Rock/Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, Electronic, and World. The DMA is the only local music award in the nation to be presented by a not-for-profit organization. Voting is via the internet.

Ed Balls Day (2011): April 28

British MP Ed Balls sent a Tweet on April 28, 2011, that amused the Twitter-sphere. He was attempting to discover what people were saying about him. Instead of searching for his name, he tweeted his name, Ed Balls @EDballs. The latent tween that seems to inhabit most people burst out that year, and the tweet became a meme, and then an annual tradition of tweets and Ed Balls Day was born.
