Creativity and Innovation Day, World: April 21

06:20 AM | -
World Creativity and Innovation Day, observed on 21 April, aims to raise awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development. Creativity can be interpreted in various ways, encompassing artistic expression and problem-solving for economic, social, and sustainable development. The creative economy, which encompasses activities based on human creativity, intellectual property, knowledge, and technology, is a transformative sector with significant income generation, job creation, and export earnings. The creative industries, including audiovisual products, design, new media, performing arts, publishing, and visual arts, contribute to sustainable development, cultural identity, innovation, and social inclusivity. They also promote dialogue and understanding among different communities and provide opportunities for developing countries to participate in high-growth areas of the global economy.

Eid al-Fitr (M): April 21/22

06:20 AM | -
Eid al-Fitr (the festival of breaking fast) is one of the most important holidays in Islam. This three-day event celebrates the end of the month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from food, water, tobacco, sex, and other cultural activities from sunrise to sunset for 28 days. Observing the fast during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Eid al Fitr marks the end of the fast and is a family celebration equivalent in festivities to Christmas in Christianity or Chinese New Year in China. Gifts are exchanged, and massive feasts are prepared that can last for up to three days. Fireworks grace the night sky. In the Islamic world, companies, schools, and governments close for up to a week. Governments and companies often grant bonuses of up to two months' pay to their Muslim employees. Vacations and family trips abroad are typical at this time.

Kindergarten Day, (DE/US)(1782): April 21

06:20 AM | -
Kindergarten Day in the United States and Germany commemorates the birthday of Friedrich Froebe (April 21, 1782 - June 21, 1852), the founder of the first kindergarten. Froebe first conceived the idea of a kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany, in 1837. As a teacher, he believed education is better through play and experience, easing the learning transition from home to formal school. He founded the first kindergarten that year in Germany. Despite being popular internationally, the Prussian government banned kindergarten until 1851. The first kindergarten in the United States opened in Saint Louis in 1873.
