The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 55/201 of December 20, 2000, proclaimed May 22 as The International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The date commemorates the adoption of the text of the Convention on May 22, 1992, by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The UN General Assembly designated December 29 (the date of entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity) the International Day for Biological Diversity. However, it took a lot of work for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations on December 29; given the number of holidays that coincide, the official date was moved to May.

Colored Troops Founders Day (1863): May 22

Although African Americans and people of color have been instrumental in every conflict before the United States became a nation. However, they were often excluded from official recognition and pay. On May 22, 1863, people of color became official US military members on the Union side in this case. By the end of the US Civil War, more than 200,000 persons of color were official US army members. Colored Troops Founders Day marks this anniversary.

The Baha'i faith marks the Declaration of the Bab each year, and it is the anniversary of the day he was declared a new messenger of God in Shiraz, modern-day Iraq, on May 22, 1844. Declaration of the Bab is a religious holiday for the faith. The Bab is considered the predecessor of the Baha'u'llah, the founder of the religion, who the Baha'i believes to be the one promised in Islam. Born Siyyid' Ali-Muhammad on October 20, 1819, he was considered a precocious child. Trained early in the teachings of the Qur'an, he was considered "of pure lineage," a direct descendent of Fatimah.

The men's tennis player with the most wins at Roland Garros post-1925 is Spaniard Rafael Nadal (twelve); for women, it is the legendary American Chris Evert (seven in total).

Harvey Milk Day (1930): May 22

Harvey Milk was an American politician and gay rights activist and the first openly gay elected official in the United States. Born on May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, New York, Milk spent much of his early life in New York City before moving to San Francisco, California, in the early 1970s. In San Francisco, Milk opened a camera shop on Castro Street, which became a hub for the local gay community, earning him the nickname "Mayor of Castro Street." Over time he became involved in local politics. After several unsuccessful attempts, Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, making history as one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. As a supervisor, Milk was a strong advocate for gay rights and worked on legislation to protect the rights of this community. He was instrumental in passing a landmark anti-discrimination ordinance that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, employment, and public services. Harvey Milk's political career ended when he was assassinated on November 27, 1978, by former supervisor Dan White. The assassination also claimed the life of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. The trial of Dan White and the subsequent verdict, which resulted in a relatively lenient sentence, led to the "White Night Riots," a series of protests and civil unrest in San Francisco. Harvey Milk's life and legacy have impacted the gay community and the fight for equal rights. His activism and political career paved the way for greater visibility and acceptance of people currently referred to as LGBTQ+ individuals. In 2009, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. His life has been the subject of several books, documentaries, and a biographical film, "Milk" (2008), starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made Harvey Milk Day an official California state public holiday in 2009.
