Public Gardens Week, Ntl.: May 12-21

In 2019 National Public Gardens Day became a week-long celebration. According to the American Public Gardens Association, the definition of a public garden is as follows: "A public garden is an institution that maintains collections of plants for the purposes of public education and enjoyment, in addition to research, conservation, and higher learning. It must be open to the public and the garden's resources and accommodations must be made to all visitors. Public gardens are staffed by professionals trained in their given areas of expertise and maintain active plant records systems." Public gardens enhance life, especially in urban environments. National Public Gardens Week is about raising awareness of the benefits of public gardens and encouraging people to assist in preserving these public treasures.

Mary Jean Wolch-Marsh first conceived Birth Mother's Day due to her adoption experience. She knew she was a mother but didn't feel recognized as such, either by those around her or by her daughter's parents. Remembering the feelings she'd experienced at her daughter's birth - feelings of triumph and euphoria - she used these to help heal. Birth Mother's Day acknowledges and recognizes every birth mother who ever loved a child lost to adoption. For birth mothers, this observance can be a time to affirm joys and acknowledge the sorrow, grief, and pain that are a part of many experiences. It can also be a time to break the silence and release years of anguish, worry, shame, or guilt. The purpose of Marsh's Birth Mother's Day ceremony is insight, affirmation, growth, and wisdom. Whether you recognize your own, others, or all birthmothers on Mother's Day or Birth Mother's Day, there are many different ways to do so. Way's to Celebrate Attend a Ceremony. Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Awareness Day: May 13

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Awareness Day is observed each year on the second Saturday of May to shed light on this often misdiagnosed, little-known genetic syndrome. First observed in 1989, CdLS is an opportunity to educate all about the syndrome. CdLS is a genetic syndrome present from birth. There is no cure, and it occurs in approximately one in 10,000 live births and affects males and females equally, regardless of race. The severity of CdLS ranges from mild to severe, but all individuals with CdLS share similar characteristics: small stature, hands, feet, and head; joined eyebrows; long eyelashes; upturned nose; and thin, downturned lips. Physical and cognitive development is delayed. Self-injurious behavior is typical, and 60-70% display some degree of autism spectrum disorder. Speech and language are delayed or absent. Limb differences and missing limbs occur in 25% of cases. Common medical problems include gastroesophageal reflux disease, bowel abnormalities, heart defects, seizures, and cleft palate. Changes in three different genes mark CdLS. These genes are NIPBL on chromosome five, SMC1A on the X chromosome, and SMC3 on chromosome ten. Changes in the latter two genes correlate with a milder form of the syndrome. In 99% of cases, the gene change that causes CdLS is sporadic, not inherited, which means the change occurs randomly during conception. Researchers estimate 20,000 individuals in the U.S. have CdLS but live without diagnosis and support services. Content adapted from the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome website.

Frog Jumping Day (1865): May 13

Today is the anniversary of Mark Twain's "Jim Smiley and his Jumping Frog" release in 1865 at age 29. Jim Smiley and his Jumping Frog was Mark Twain's first book to draw a broad audience, marking the beginning of one of the most celebrated writing careers in American history and the birth of the Calaveras County jumping frog contest. This popular tourist attraction remains alive to this day. The story of Smiley and his frog is about gambling and having the wool pulled over your eyes, teaching a valuable life lesson everyone can benefit from.

International Hummus Day began in 2012 to encourage people to gather and eat together while celebrating this humble food. Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern and Mediterranean paste made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and various spices. The dish has a rich history going back centuries. The word "hummus" is derived from the Arabic word for chickpeas, "?imma?." Chickpea cultivation in West Asia and the Mediterranean stretches back to 7,000 BC. The earliest documented recipes for hummus are in cookbooks from the 13th century in Cairo, Egypt. Falafel, made from fava beans and ground chickpeas, is another classic Arabic dish using several of the same ingredients rumored to have originated in Cairo. One of the essential ingredients in hummus, tahini (sesame seed paste), also has a long history in the region. The use of sesame seeds dates back to ancient civilizations, such as the Assyrians and Babylonians, around 3,000 BC. It is unclear when tahini and chickpeas were first combined. The history of hummus encompasses the cultural and culinary traditions of various Middle Eastern and Mediterranean societies, including the Ottomans, the Levantines, the Persians, and the Arabs. As the Ottoman Empire expanded, hummus spread to various parts of the empire, including Greece, Turkey, and the Balkans. This expansion led to regional variations in the dish, with different countries and cultures adding their unique twists to the basic recipe. In the 20th century, hummus gained popularity in the Western world, particularly in the United States and Europe, as a healthy and delicious food option. The dish's popularity has grown significantly over the past few decades, with an increasing variety of flavors and ingredients added to cater to diverse tastes. Today, hummus is enjoyed worldwide and recognized as a staple food in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. It has become a symbol of culinary cultural exchange and is celebrated for its delicious taste, versatility, and numerous health benefits.
