Celiac Disease Awareness Day (1839): September 13

06:20 AM | -
Celiac Disease Awareness Day occurs each year on the birthday of Dr. Samuel Gee. Its objective is to educate Americans about celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, and the benefits of a gluten-free diet for the 1% of people in the US with this autoimmune, hereditary disease. Dr. Gee is responsible for identifying the link between diet and celiac disease. He was born on September 13, 1839.

Defy Superstition Day: September 13

Defy Superstition Day gives you the license to let black cats cross your path, walk under ladders and break mirrors with impunity. Today is the day to resist following superstitions or eliminate them altogether.

Fortune Cookie Day: September 13

06:20 AM | -
The fortune cookie idea originated in Japan in the mid-19th century. Per Japanese tradition, fortunes, referred to as omikuji, were placed inside a cookie and served to guests. At the turn of the century, this idea found its way to a Japanese tea house in San Francisco via the Benkyodo Bakery. Rather than the traditional sesame and miso batter, the bakery changed to butter, vanilla, and flour batter and called them "fortune tea cakes." Los Angeles and Hong Kong have competing claims for the title of "creator of the fortune cookie." Frankly, both claims are irrelevant. The idea and concept originated in Japan. The competing cities fine-tuned it.

Food Stamps Day (1959): September 11

06:20 AM | -
It is a common misconception that the US Food Stamps Program for low-income Americans came about during the New Deal of the Roosevelt era. It took longer. A congressional bill created the program on September 11, 1959, making surplus food available to people. The Eisenhower administration signed the two-year experiment into law on September 21, 1959. However, the program was not implemented. It would take an Executive Order from President John F. Kennedy to get the ball rolling by creating stamps and removing the requirement that food comes from national surplus reserves. Finally, the Johnson administration, in 1964, would make it a permanent US Government program and expand it to 40 countries struggling with food insecurity overseas. Today this program is referred to as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and is primarily administered by private contractors through the Department of Agriculture.

Grand Prix of Japan (JP): September 11

06:20 AM | -
The Japanese Grand Prix is a prestigious Formula One (F1) motor racing event held in Japan. It has been part of the F1 World Championship calendar since 1976, with the exception of a few years. The race has been held at two different circuits over the years: the Fuji Speedway and the Suzuka Circuit. The first Japanese Grand Prix took place in 1976 at the Fuji Speedway, located near the base of Mount Fuji. After the 1977 race, the event was discontinued due to safety concerns and financial issues. The Japanese Grand Prix returned to the F1 calendar in 1987, this time at the Suzuka Circuit. The Suzuka Circuit, located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, is a 5.807 km (3.608 miles) long track with a unique figure-eight layout. The circuit is known for its challenging combination of high-speed sections, technical corners, and elevation changes, which test the drivers' skill and car performance. Iconic corners like the high-speed 130R and the tight hairpin turn contribute to the circuit's reputation as a demanding and exciting track. Over the years, the Japanese Grand Prix has produced many memorable races and moments that have played a crucial role in the outcome of the World Championship. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost had their infamous collisions in 1989 and 1990 at Suzuka, and Michael Schumacher secured his first World Championship for Ferrari in 2000 at the same track.

Hot Cross Bun Day, Ntl.: September 11

06:20 AM | -
National Hot Cross Bun Day celebrates the hot cross bun, a sweet pastry traditionally eaten at the end of Lent in the British Commonwealth Christian communities. Bakeries often have them on sale this day. A hot cross bun is a sweet pastry made with raisins and cinnamon and marked with a cross on its top. Traditionally eaten on Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, it signals the end of the season of Lent. The cross atop represents the crucifixion of Jesus. The spices inside of the bun symbolize herbs rubbed on His body before the internment, and the bread, as in Christian tradition, represents the body of Jesus Christ. Why this day falls in September rather than in the spring on Good Friday is unknown. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, she banned hot cross buns except for funerals, Christmas and Easter. It turns out hot cross buns are a hot topic politically as well!

Line Dancing Week, Ntl.: September 11-17

06:20 AM | -
Line Dancing, as we see it today, began in the 1970s with the Disco movement. The most famous line dance at the time was "The Hustle." Line dancing gained popularity in Country Western clubs during the 1980s, gaining new fans through films including "Thelma & Louise." The great appeal of line dancing is you can participate without a partner and still be dancing with a group of people. In the 1990s, "The Macarena" gained popularity. The nobility of Europe used line dancing with partners going back to Medieval times. Several folk dances, such as the Virginia Reel, also include lines of couples. The difference between the classic forms of line dancing and the modern version is that individuals, rather than couples, make up the lines. National Line Dancing Week begins annually on the second Monday of September.
