Mad Hatter Day occurs on October 6 (10/6) each year in the US and June 10 (10/6) in the United Kingdom. The day is a hat tip to illustrator Jogn Tenniel's interpretation of the Mad Hatter in Louis Carrol's "Alice through the Looking Glass." In his illustrations, the Mad Hatter wears a hat with a slip of paper that says, "In this style 10/6". In the United Kingdom, Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on June 10, as Europeans read dates with the day first and the month second. Who's right? Who cares! Americans celebrate this day as the "Second April's Fools Day" each October. The Brits quietly disagree, preferring to celebrate in June.

Noodle Day (2009): October 6

Noodle Day is a celebration of the life and work of Franco-American author Raymond Federman (May 15, 1928 – October 6, 2009). In his book, "Double or Nothing," he frequently referred to noodles in analogies. He was a beloved writer, teacher, and wordsmith; his fans created this day.

Federman was the sort of person who avoided the conventional opening sentence and would probably hate a conventional eulogy. As an author, his work was called "experimental fiction," "surfiction," "metafiction," and optimistic. Federman was fond of calling it "playgerism." His sense of play led to an inspired Noodle Day.

That rhymed, but it was an accident.

Shemini Atzeret (J): October 6/7

Shemini Atzeret is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month, Tishri. It is a holiday in which work is not permitted. Judaism 101 explains the holiday thus: "Shemini Atzeret means "the assembly of the eighth (day)."

Rabbinic literature explains the holiday this way: "Our Creator is a host who invites us as visitors for a limited time, but when the time comes for us to leave, He has enjoyed himself so much that He asks us to stay another day. Smile Day, World: October 6

The first Friday of October is World Smile Day, encouraging people to smile.

The holiday comes from the creator of the smiley face, Harvey Ball.

The famous symbol was created in 1963. As the years passed, Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world.

The smiley face knows no politics, no geography, and no religion. Harvey's idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®.

Ever since the first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA, and around the world.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the premier international ballooning event, powered by the perfect October climate and a phenomenon called the "Albuquerque Box" (a combination of weather patterns and geographic landscape, the box allows balloonists to control and even retrace their adventure).

The place to be in October is Balloon Fiesta Park. The 360-acre Park with 100 acres of grass and booths boasts balloons and concessions selling everything from traditional New Mexican food to balloon memorabilia. Each year balloon teams from around the world participate in the event, and news coverage originates from more than 50 countries. It has become the most photographed event in the world.
