Come & Take it Day (1835): October 2*

The first of two "Come & Take It" days, today's date marks the anniversary of the Battle of Gonzales, the first battle of the Texan Revolution on October 2, 1835. The flag flown by the settlers beheld a cannon with the words "Come and Take It" below as a challenge to the Mexican army. Ironically, the cannon was given to the settlers by the Mexican government in 1831. Come and Take It! has come to epitomize American chutzpah and dogged defiance. The 2nd "Come and Take It Day!" is also an anniversary commemorating an event in 1778. The phrase "Come and Take It!" was first used in 480 BC in the Battle of Thermopylae by King Leonidas of Sparta against the Persians.

Custodial Workers are the people we often don’t see but make our lives better. Custodial workers perform cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair tasks in offices, public spaces, and homes. They are called Custodians, Janitors, Maids, Housekeepers, Cleaning Staff, and Cleaners. They often make minimum wage or just barely above it. What they do is critical. Imagine if your garbage at work wasn’t taken out. Or if the floor wasn’t cleaned, dusted, and kept in good repair. Nothing is worse than entering a grimy bathroom with overflowing trash and no soap, toilet paper, or water. The reason we rarely must endure such disgust is thanks to custodial workers. Today is a day to honor them, seek them out, and thank them for their service. By doing so, you’ll genuinely make their day!

National Customer Service Week is a week-long opportunity to raise awareness of customer service and its vital role in successful business practices and the growth of the UK and US economies. The event is recognized in both countries and occurs on the first M-F in October. History: Customer Service Week is an international celebration of the importance of customer service and the people who serve and support customers daily. In 1992 the US Congress proclaimed Customer Service Week a nationally recognized event. Since 1991, the Customer Service Group has sponsored the official Customer Service Week program. The group provides how-to information, celebration materials imprinted with the official Customer Service Week logo, and inspiration from the hundreds of service and support professionals who share their celebration stories, plans, and ideas. Drive Safely Work Week: October 2-6

The first work week (Monday-Friday) of October is the Drive Safely Work Week (DSWW). DSWW is a five-day event sponsored annually by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS). Its purpose is to raise awareness about traffic safety and remind people to plan their journey to work and prepare for different and unexpected driving conditions. This event first ran in 1996.
